Terrington war memorials

The names of those who served in the armed forces in World War I are commemeorated on the Roll of Honour in the church and those who died in World War II are commemorated on the memorial outside the church. The book 'Terrington War Memorials' giving biographical information on those who died in the two wars was researched by village residents and was published in 2014 by Ryedale Family History Group.

The World War 1 Roll of Honour is located facing the South door of the church on the wall near the tower. According to the Faculty giving permission for the work, granted in 1920, there was to be a book at the side of the tablet giving details of the service of each man and the incised lettering on the tablet was to be coloured red. The book does not seem to have been created and the red colouring was not done.

The tablet was unveiled on 28 May 1920. Despite being moved three times to give it better light, the lettering was virtually impossible to read until the red highlighting was finally undertaken by Martin Coward in 2014.

There are 78 names on the tablet: 7 who gave their lives, 57 who served overseas, and 14 who served in the Home Forces. Given that the 1911 census only contains 96 men beteen the ages of 16 and 40 resident in the parish, it can be imagined what a huge impact their absence must have had on the community. (Not all the

World War 2 Memorial

The World War 2 memorial is in the form of a Celtic cross, made of Aberdeen granite, 8 feet high, situated outside the church, near the South door.

It was unveiled on 18th September 1948 by Sir William Worsley, who had served as a lieutenant and subsequently captain with the Green Howards (now part of the Yorkshire Regiment) in World War I. He was wounded and taken prisoner. He had spent the first few years of his life at The Lodge in Terrington.

Present were Mr T Edwards, a relative (brother?) of Captain Frank Edwards whose address at the time of death was The Lodge, Terrington and Sir Alfred and Lady Lascelles, residents of Cliffe Hall, Terrington from 1914 to 1952 whose son Wing Commander Francis Lascelles DFC, born 1912, who would have come to Terrington as a small child.
